What You Need To Know About Type 1 Diabetes And Your Child

Health & Medical Blog

Type-1 Diabetes is unfortunately more common than many people realize. Although the disease is very manageable, if it goes undetected it can be fatal. This is why it is so important that parents understand what Type-1 Diabetes is and what the symptoms are so that they can catch it early on. Here are some things you should be looking for.

What Is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type-1 Diabetes is different than Type-2 Diabetes. Many adults get Type-2 Diabetes, which is caused mainly from lifestyle. As people put stress on their pancreas through excessive amounts of sugar in their system, their pancreas will start to shut down. This is why people with Type-2 Diabetes can usually manage it through medication and lifestyle, since reducing their amounts of sugar can reduce this effect.

However, Type-1 Diabetes is not induced by lifestyle. It is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system recognizes the pancreas as being "non-self" and attacks it. The pancreas then becomes non-functional. It has nothing to do with what the person is eating or what they are doing. Instead, it is completely beyond their control. Once the immune system has attacked the pancreas, the organ no longer makes any insulin, which means that people with Type-1 Diabetes must take insulin injections to balance their blood sugar, or else they could have fatal complications.

Type-1 Diabetes often presents itself during childhood, which is why it is so important that parents know what to look for.

What Are The Symptoms Of Type-1 Diabetes?

Many times the disease will prevent itself like the common flu. The child might feel sick to their stomach, have a loss of appetite, and headaches. In addition, the body will try to excrete the extra sugar in the blood through the urine. Many children with diabetes have to use the bathroom at an alarmingly high rate. The sugar will be dispelled through the urine in the form of ketones. The child's breath may smell sweet and he or she will probably be thirsty all the time.

How Is Diabetes Detected?

If you suspect that your child has diabetes, you should take them to the doctor right away. They can do a simple urine analysis that will test for sugar or ketones in the urine. In addition, you can take the child's blood sugar levels. If the levels are high, this is a sign that they may have diabetes.

Since diabetes is such a serious disease, it is not something that should be ignored. If you are worried about diabetes for you child, trust your intuition and get them tested at a children's clinic, like Kitsap Children's Clinic LLP
